Iron Bulls sign Port's forgotten man

Santhipap Siri's blink-and-you'll-miss-it stint at Thai Port is over. The 26-year-old has joined Bangkok FC on a free transfer. In departing, he becomes the tenth player to have left PAT Stadium since the season ended.

The ex-TOT player signed for Port during the 2011 mid-term break, but was struck down by a virus shortly afterwards. He fought his way back to full fitness towards the end of the campaign, and finally made his debut for the club in a 3-1 home defeat against Sri Racha. The hapless midfielder was substituted in the 42nd minute, never to be seen again.

More badges than a boy scout

It appears that Thai Port's latest club badge lasted just one game! The ship/lion combo worn on the players shirts during the Toyota League Cup Final has proved to be rather unpopular with certain sections of the Khlong Toey Army. So much so, that the club have asked fans to design a new logo for the 2012 season. You better do it quick, though! The closing date is February 12th - details here.

Given that Thai clubs have a penchant for imitating other teams badges, I reckon my tongue-in-cheek design is a winner!

Super Rich get green light from PAT

Following a 3-hour meeting with Port Authority executives, Thai Port Vice President Worapong Tantivejchayanon told journalists that Super Rich have been given the go-ahead to run the team for the 2012 season.

'Big Ben' went on to say that 28,000,000 baht has already been set aside for the new campaign, although 50,000,000 baht will be needed to fund the team until the end of the year. He plans to make up the shortfall will extra funding from PAT, plus sponsorship money.

The long standing floodlight issue was also raised at the meeting. For the umpteenth time, it was stated that the lighting will be brought up to TPL standards, so that Port home games can kick-off at 6:00pm. Believe it when you see it!

Double Navy swoop

Club Director Denphong Pongyaat has told MGR Sport that Thai Port are close to signing Alex Da Costa from Siam Navy. The 25-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder/forward would be a very welcome addition to the squad! He was named as one of TLO's top 10 signings of the season, despite plying his trade for one of the relegated sides. His team-mate at Navy, Olof Hviden-Watson, has already signed a two-year deal with Port.

Denphong also revealed that Port ended their pursuit of Ney Fabiano due to his high wage demands. It is believed that the player has now signed for Songkhla FC or Wuachon United (don't ask).

Wisarut Wai-Ngan has been released from his contract with Thai Port. The 20-year-old ex-Osotspa defender is set to sign for Division One side Nakhon Ratchasima FC. The future of Ekkapoom Potharungroj (pictured below) is still undecided. If I was a betting man, I'd have £10 on him starting the season at Muangthong United.

UPDATE! TLO have confirmed the news about Piyakul Kaewnamkang AKA 'coach Um' taking over as head coach. Thongchai, it seems, will be moving 'upstairs'. Siamsport have also picked up on the story.

New season, new head coach?

Will Thai Port have a new head coach for the 2012 season? Quite possibly, is the answer. True Sport News and Sport Radio 96 are linking AFC A-Licence coach Piyakul Kaewnamkang (pictured below) with the position currently held by Thongchai Sukkokee. If Piyakul is handed the job, it is likely that Thongchai will be assigned the role of Assistant Director.

Copycats?

Thai Port forum member thaiportfcgogogo has pointed out the glaring similarity between the lion on Port FC's new club crest and that of Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions. I'm sure it's a complete coincidence! Incidentally, there is an interesting thread on thailandsusu, showing several examples of Thai club badges being similar to those of other teams.

Port get cash injection from PAT

Worapong Tantivejchayanon AKA 'Big Ben' has told MGR Sport that Port Authority have pumped 10 million baht into the club, with 10-15 million more to follow this week. The initial cash injection was presumably used to pay overdue salaries and bonuses. As the for the second lot of money, who knows? Will they fix the floodlights? Don't hold your breath!

Both parties will meet on February 9th to discuss club matters.

Swat Cats target Port player

TLO are linking Thai Port full-back Wisarut Wai-Ngan (pictured below) with a move to Nakhon Ratchasima FC. The 20-year-old right back arrived at PAT Stadium from Osotspa Saraburi in July 2011, and has made 15 appearances for the club, including a brief cameo in yesterday's Toyota League Cup Final.

The Swat Cats recently won promotion to Division One via the regional league play-offs and have already begun recruiting for next season. Amongst others, they've snapped up Tehwa Sritammanusarn, Kittipoom Paphunga and Suphachai Pupha from BEC Tero. Moudourou Swa-Moise is also said to be on their radar.

Join Thai Port? Elementary, my dear Watson!

Thai Port look to have started their squad rebuilding ahead of the 2012 season. They have announced on facebook that 'Watson is coming'. The Watson they are referring to is former Osotspa Saraburi and current Siam Navy midfielder Olof Hviden-Watson. The deal has been in the pipelines for a few days, and will hopefully become official during the week.

UPDATE: Olof has confirmed the move on twitter: "I'm bringing back the show to Bangkok, i just sign a 2 year contract with THAI PORT FC! :D :D #PortFC"

Toyota League Cup Final: Thai Port 0 - 2 Buriram PEA

The heavens may have opened above Suphachalasai stadium before kick-off, but Thai Port were unable to rain on Buriram PEA's parade. The TPL champions and FA Cup winners won a closely fought contest on a saturated pitch, completing the treble in the process.

Thai international Rangsan Vivatchaichok opened the scoring after 21 minutes. His left-footed free kick curled past the outstretched hand of Munze Ulrich and into the top corner of the net.

PEA wrapped up the win in stoppage time after Thai Port had sent everyone forward for a corner, including the goalkeeper. The loose ball broke to substitute Clarence Bitang, who kept his cool and rolled the ball into the empty net from 45 yards out - cue wild celebrations on the pitch and in the stands.

Buriram deserved their win, but Thai Port were valiant in defeat. Every single player can proud of their performance. The lads ran their socks off and fought toe-to-toe with the opposition. That's all we can ask of them.

Good luck to all the players who are leaving the club. Let's hope that the manager can bring in some decent replacements. Watch this space!

Cup Final Countdown: Predicted line-up

With the Thai Premier League season finally put to bed, focus now turns to the rearranged Toyota League Cup final between Thai Port and Buriram PEA. Port are looking to retain the trophy they won 14 months ago, against the same opposition. TPL winners and FA Cup holders Buriram, on the other hand, are on the verge of completing a clean sweep of the major domestic honours.

Thai Port's route to the final was fairly straight forward, despite us winning just 4 out of 8 matches. We scraped through against Chiang Rai on away goals after two draws, but won all the other ties by a two goal margin (some over two-legs).

Buriram PEA's Toyota League Cup run almost came to a very early end. They hammered Kasem Bundit University 5-0 in round one, only to be drawn against Buriram FC in round two. The TPL team were held to a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes of play and needed a penalty shoot-out to overcome their first division neighbours. PEA were given another scare at the semi-final stage. They lost 3-2 to Chonburi in a thrilling second-leg encounter, but advanced on the away goals rule after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.

Neither side has played in the TLC since September, and Thai Port haven't played a competitive fixture for almost a month. For that reason alone, I'm tempted to throw the proverbial form-book out of the window for this game. Results from a few poxy friendlies are no way to gauge progress. For the record, though, Port finished their league campaign poorly, picking up just 5 points from their final 5 TPL games.

Buriram were in action as recently as last weekend. The TPL champions drew 2-2 with Chiang Rai United, despite having two players sent off. Before that, they'd won 11 TPL games out 12. Impressive stuff! During that run, Atthapol Buspakom's men wrapped up a league double over Port with a 1-0 win at PAT Stadium, having won by the same scoreline at the I-Mobile Stadium earlier in the season. Form-book or no form-book, PEA are clear favourites to win on Saturday.

The build-up to the game has been dominated by talk of who will be eligible to play for Thai Port. As I understand it, all the players who have agreed moves to other clubs/had their contracts terminated, will be available to Thongchai Sukkokee for selection, bar Worawut Wangsawad and Jacob Aikhionbare. Being able to call upon the likes of Munze, Moise, Mongkol etc will give the Khlong Toei-based team a huge boost ahead of kick-off.

I'm not one for making predictions - but, I'll stick my neck on the line and say that whoever scores first will win the match. Indeed, during 2011, Thai Port didn't lose a single game in which they scored the first goal. I, for one, hope we can extend that run even further!

Cup Final Countdown: Training photos

TLO have posted a few photos from today's training session at PAT Stadium. It's nice to see that Munze, Moise, Mongkol and Todsapol all took part. All four are expected to be involved on Saturday against Buriram, despite the fact that they are set to leave the club after the match. Let's hope they enjoy a memorable swansong.

In other news, the Thai Port players have received some of the money owed to them by Super-Rich, with more to follow soon. Good news for all concerned.

Cup Final Countdown: The road to Suphachalasai

Thai Port have won just four of their eight matches in this season Toyota League Cup, but a combination of a solid defence and the knack of scoring when it really matters leaves us with a chance of winning the trophy for the second season running. Here's a look back at our route to the final;

ROUND 1: AYUTTHAYA 1-3 THAI PORT

18/06/2011 - Thai Port began their defence of the Toyota League Cup with a trip to Ayutthaya FC. The lower league side put in a spirited display but they could not spoil Thongchai Sukkokee's first game in charge of Port. Phudit Niamkong, Sivakorn Chakuprasat and Kiatjareon Ruangparn all netted for the visitors. Panuphong Lamphuttha replied for the hosts.

ROUND 2: THAI PORT 3-1 TOT

29/06/2011 - Thai Port safely navigated their way into the last 16 of the Toyota League Cup with a 3-1 win over TOT. It wasn't plain sailing, however, as the visitors opened the scoring early in the game through Nattapol Poontawee. Port hit back quickly and led 2-1 at the break thanks to goals from Ekkapoom Potharungroj and Worawut Wangsawad. Ekkapoom put the result beyond doubt late in the game with his second goal of the tie.

06/07/2011 - If you didn't see the game, count yourself lucky. It was a shocker. The first-half wasn't much of a spectacle for the sparse crowd at Thammasat Stadium, with chances at a premium. The second-half was worse. To compound everyone's misery, the sadistic match officials added on 5 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game. Shame on them!

03/08/2011 - Thai Port booked their place in the Toyota League Cup last 8 with a fairly comfortable 2-0 win over Police United at PAT Stadium. All the damage was done in the first-half, and the visitors were the architects of their own downfall. Sompong Yod-Ard, under very little pressure, inexplicably palmed the ball into his his own net to gift Port the lead. Worawut Wangsawad wrapped up the win from the penalty spot following a foul by Whoo Hyun.

17/08/2011 - Port gained a creditable 1-1 draw against Chiang Rai United in the Toyota League Cup quarter-final first-leg. Midfielder Kim Ba-Wi opened the scoring for the visitors in the first-half with an excellent left-footed strike. However, Chiang Rai United skipper Wasan Nathasan equalised for the Fighting Beetles on the hour mark. Port finished the game with 10 men after Mongkol Namnuad was shown a second yellow card late in the game.

24/08/2011 - Thai Port edged into the semi-finals of the Toyota League Cup on away goals following a 0-0 draw with Chiang Rai United at PAT Stadium. The decisive moment of the tie, therefore, was Kim Ba-Wi's excellent strike in the first-leg.

14/09/2011 - Thai Port have one foot in the final of the Toyota League Cup after a 3-0 semi-final first-leg victory over Pattalung at PAT Stadium. Port took the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Worawut Wangsawad's 5th goal of the campaign. The lead was extended after the break by Ekkapoom Potharungroj and Jacob Aikihionbare, leaving the home side in total command of the tie.

21/09/2011 - Thai Port reached their second successive Toyota League Cup final despite losing today's semi-final second-leg tie. Hosts Pattalung battled hard to try and overcome the 3-0 first-leg deficit, but in all honesty, they never really looked like doing so. They did, however, manage to score a late consolation goal thanks to some neat footwork and a quality finish from Rowland Guina.

Thrown to The Sharks

Thai Port will begin their 2012 Thai Premier League campaign with a tough away fixture against Chonburi on Saturday 17th March. Indeed, it will be our third opening day visit to Chonburi in the last six years. Port won 3-1 in 2006, whilst Chonburi won 2-0 in 2011.

Sharks fans will be pleased to know that Thai Port have lost their last four opening day fixtures, scoring zero goals in the process - 2008: Port 0-1 TOT, 2009: Muangthong United 3-0 Port, 2010: Samut Songkhram 1-0 Port, 2011: Chonburi 2-0 Port. Let's hope we can end that dismal run in 2012!

www.clubwebsite.co.uk/chonburifc informs me that Thai Port transfer target Ney Fabiano could be set to join up with ex-Chonburi coach Jadet Meelarp at Songkhla FC. Jadet is said to be keen on signing several other Sharks players, including Arthit Sunthornpit, Kiatprawut Saiweaw and Puritat Jarikanon. All three, plus Ney Fabiano were recently pictured training with Songkhla (see below).

Seventh heaven

Yesterday's round of fixtures marked the end of a marathon 2011 league campaign for the 18 TPL clubs. Champions Buriram PEA drew 2-2 at Chiang Rai United and, at long last, got their hands on the brand new trophy. The main talking point of the day was who would claim the unwanted third relegation spot. Well, Siam Navy were the fall guys, losing 2-0 away at already relegated Sri Racha. Khon Kaen are the other team destined for Division 1 next season.

TOT's surprise 3-2 win over BEC Tero at Thephasadin meant that Thai Port leapfrogged Tero into 7th place, due to our superior head-to-head record against the Fire Dragons. Had it been decided on goal difference, we would have finished 8th. Given the numerous problems that have beset the club this season, a 7th place finish for Port is very respectable indeed!

Toyota League Cup Final press day

Thongchai Sukkokee, Steven Robb and Ekkapoom Potharungroj represented Thai Port at today's pre-Toyota League Cup Final press conference held at the Golden Tulip Sovereign hotel in Bangkok. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Kyoichi Tanada (president of Toyota Thailand), Kanokphan Chunlakasem (governor of the Sport Authority of Thailand), Pongsak Phalonan (president of Siam Sport Syndicate), Winfried Schäfer (Thailand national team manager) and Miss Thailand!

Thongchai told the assembled press that Thai Port's aim is to defend the title and to stop Buriram completing a clean sweep of this season's domestic trophies. Coach Thong went on to state that although the Port players are inferior in quality to their Buriram counterparts, he believes that the mental strength of our squad and the support from our fans can help guide us to victory.

The winners of the Toyota League Cup Final will receive 5,000,000 baht in prize money plus the chance to represent Thailand in the Toyota Premier Cup vs J-league side Vegalta Sendai on February 18th at Suphachalasai Stadium.

Yet another departure

Thai Port boss Thongchai Sukkokee has confirmed to TLO that Mongkol Namnaud and Todsapol Lated have been snapped up by a rival team, whilst Worawut Wangsawad (pictured below-left) has also agreed terms with another club - rumoured to be Suphanburi FC. The 30-year-old midfielder has also been linked with Sisaket and his former club TTM.

Thongchai went on to state that Mong & Todsapol could still feature for Port in the Toyota League Cup Final vs Buriram on February 4th. The game kicks-off at 5:00pm or 5:30pm (get there early) and will be televised on Channel 3.

UPDATE: Manager.co.th reckon that Worawut has indeed signed for Suphanburi. It doesn't look like he will be playing in the Cup Final - Munze and Moise, however, might be able to play. Thai Port spokesman Denphong Pongyaat claims that the club hope to pay 2-months wages to the players and staff before the end of January...

2011 SEASON REVIEW

Off the pitch problems for Thai Port; on the pitch problems for Muangthong United (despite God being on their side); the rise and fall of the national team and a never-ending season. Here's our round-up of the last twelve months in the TPL.

JANUARY

It's pre-season yet Muangthong United start the year by 'parting company' with hugely successful coach Rene Desaeyere. No official reason is given for the departure which tells all in itself: a behind-the-scenes conflict between Rene and the club's owners.

Uncertainty grips Thai Port F.C. In December, the Port Authority, owners of the PAT Stadium, locked the gates as they demanded over a million baht from Thai Port F.C in unpaid rent. By January, it was unclear if Port would even be able to start the season as the PAT and the club were locked in a dispute over a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

FEBRUARY

Just five games are played on the opening weekend of the TPL. Bangkok Glass get off to a poor start by putting in a dreadful performance and losing 2-1 away at Pattaya.

Muangthong United's season takes an early blow as they fall at the first hurdle of the AFC Champions League. Sriwijaya of Indonesia won the one-off East Zone play-off 7-6 on penalties after the match finished 2-2 AET. The defeat sets the tone for a season of disappointment and underachievement.

Rene Desaeyere’s successor in the MTU hot seat, Carlos Carvalho, was sacked in late February after just a month in the job: a chaotic start to the season for the Twin Qilins before they had even played their first TPL match.

MARCH

The month begins with MTU announcing their new head coach: Henrique Calisto quit his job as coach of the Vietnam national side for a new life in Nonthaburi. Ray Wilkins and Winnie Schaefer, amongst others, had been linked with the job. Calisto's first task was to witness his new charges being thrashed 3-0 at Army United. The Soldiers enjoy a strong start to the season and move to the top of the table after taking the 2009 and 2010 champions apart in Din Daeng. Things get worse for MTU as they suffer a shocking 5-1 defeat at Osotspa in the middle of the month.

At this stage of the season, Bangkok’s big three of Muangthong, Bangkok Glass and Thai Port are all in the bottom half of the table.

Some good news for Thai Port as the Super Rich Company Ltd invests heavily in the club.

APRIL

20,011 are on hand at the Yamaha Stadium to watch Muangthong United and fellow title contenders Buriram PEA play out a goalless draw. Bangkok Glass's season goes from bad to worse as they lose 2-1 against a TOT side which had lost five in a row. The embarrassing defeat leaves the Glass Rabbits just three points above the relegation zone. BEC Tero Sasana is the best-performing Bangkok side in April: the Fire Dragons finish the month in third place.

Khlong Toey's Thai Port F.C again found themselves the centre of financial problems in late April. The club's main backers, Super Rich Co Ltd, threatened to withdraw all funding and take their money elsewhere. That MoU is again at issue. Super Rich are less than happy with its constrictive terms and want the PAT to make some concessions. One effect of the impasse is the non-payment of players' wages in March and April.

MAY

The Port Authority and Super Rich call a truce. The PAT made the necessary concessions in order to induce Super Rich into signing the MoU. Unsurprisingly, this wasn't to be the last time in the 2011 season that Port's financial problems made headlines.

It's a bad month for the FAT and president Worawi Makudi in particular. Worawi is accused of attempted profiteering by Lord Triesman in the now infamous 'television rights' controversy. And in the same week, Worawi also saw fit to cancel the FAT presidential election at the last minute, allegedly because he was heading for defeat in the poll.

Media mogul and Muangthong United owner Ravi Lohtong announces that he wants to sell the club. The owner of Siamsport oversaw MTU's transformation from an obscure non-league outfit into a title-winning machine and one of the biggest clubs in the country.

JUNE

Runaway leaders Buriram PEA finally lose a game – 1-0 at Sisaket – but Muangthong and Chonburi, PEA's main challengers, cut each other's throats as they draw 1-1 in Chonburi on the same weekend.

A host of coaching changes in June: Bryan Robson resigns as coach of the Thai national team; Peter Butler is sacked by BEC Tero Sasana and Sasom Pobprasert resigns from Thai Port to take the reins at Buriram F.C of Division 1. Sasom's resignation is, according to the man himself, an act of self-sacrifice. Cash-strapped Port receive a big fee from Buriram to secure Sasom's services and get big earners off the payroll as four of Port's best players, along with their coveted coach, head for the northeast.

FAT president Worawi Makudi wins the rescheduled election by a huge majority. His first act after re-election is to remove two of his opponents from the FAT executive committee; his second is to appoint Winnie Schaefer as new national team coach.

JULY

TPL chiefs extend the June mid-season break by wiping almost all fixtures from the schedule in July.

There was really only one story this month: the signing of Robbie Fowler by Muangthong United. He may be 36 and well past his best, but in a country where Liverpool is the best-supported team, the signing of Fowler is greeted with near hysteria by fans and media alike. He even has an audience with Thailand's new Prime Minister as 'God' gets his first taste of an MTU game: a 9-0 demolition of Samut Prakan United in the FA Cup.

AUGUST

And staying with Robbie Fowler, he makes his competitive debut for MTU at the start of the month in a League Cup match against Kasetsart University. He plays for 32 minutes of the second half at the Thupatemi Stadium.

Thailand are drawn with Australia, Saudi Arabia and Oman in the third-round group stage of 2014 World Cup Qualifying. The Thais are immediately considered rank outsiders to progress.

Muangthong have a good weekend late in the month: a 3-1 win over TOT moves them into second and to within six points of PEA as the leaders are held 1-1 at home by Pattaya and Chonburi lose 1-0 in Phichit.

SEPTEMBER

Thailand play their first two group-stage World Cup Qualifiers, and the general consensus is "Wow!" The first match, away in Australia, was meant to be a walk in the park for the home side. Instead, Thailand took a 15th-minute lead, and Australia needed a goal four minutes from time to snatch victory, after equalizing midway through the second half. A few days later, back in Bangkok, the Thais took out their frustrations on a hapless Oman side. Schaefer's marauding Elephants handed the shell-shocked visitors a 3-0 thrashing, and Paul Le Guen's side got off lightly – a score of 5-0 or 6-0 wouldn't have flattered the hosts.

FAT president Worawi Makudi again came under the glare of an uncomfortably close spotlight. This time, Fifa, the world governing body of which he is an executive committee member, asked him to clarify his legal position in relation to land he owned in Nong Jork. Fifa had reason to believe that Worawi had used funds acquired through Fifa's 'Goal' programme to build the National Football Training Centre on land owned by Worawi. The FAT president strongly denied the accusations and threatened Fifa with legal action.

OCTOBER

Robbie Fowler's first game as head coach is a successful one as Muangthong win 3-1 at Samut Songkhram. Fowler's predecessor Henrique Calisto was sacked at the end of September ostensibly because MTU were knocked out of the AFC Cup, but actually for a behind-the-scenes falling-out with owner Ravi Lohtong.

Thai Port's off-the-pitch problems return. Port's players claim through the media that they haven't been paid for three months and will strike unless they receive some cash sharpish. They targeted the League Cup Final on October 15th for their industrial action. But, in the event, the clash with Buriram PEA is postponed owing to the ever-increasing risk of flooding.

NOVEMBER

There was precious little league action as the schedule is cleared to allow the under-23s maximum preparation time for the SEA Games in Indonesia. Futile generosity on the part of the TPL as the team performs terribly, losing three out of four of their group games thus falling at the first hurdle.

The senior men's national side returns to World Cup action. Unfortunately, some of the hope generated in the early stages of the competition starts to evaporate as Thailand lose back-to-back matches away in Saudi Arabia and at home to Australia. The Thais were outclassed in Riyadh, but gave the Aussies another run for their money. Schaefer's men should have taken at least a point from the game in Bangkok and possibly all three, but went down 1-0 after conceding another late goal against the Socceroos.

Muangthong's title challenge completely falls apart as they draw at home to Army United and away at BEC Tero whilst rivals PEA win against TTM and Siam Navy.

DECEMBER

Buriram PEA wrap up the title with five games to spare by winning away at Army United. Muangthong's faltering form continues as they draw 2-2 at rock-bottom Khon Kaen – after leading 2-0; lose at home to Siam Navy (MTU's first home defeat since 2008), lose away at TTM Phichit and lose at home to rivals for second place Chonburi.

There's no change at Thai Port as players continue to claim they are not being paid, or, at best, are being paid irregularly.

The fixture fiasco reaches farcical levels. At the time of writing, the season is due to end on January 28th, just two weeks shy of a full year since the season started. "Flooding" is the official excuse for all the delays. In truth, the extended mid-season break in July; the break to allow the under-23s preparation time for the SEA Games in November and the decision by Worawi Makudi at the start of the year not to have scheduled midweek games are really to blame. And the League Cup Final, originally scheduled for October 15th, will now be played sometime in February. In other words, our ‘2012 Season Review’ will also include part of the 2011 season!

TPL clubs eye Ekkapoom swoop

According to manager.co.th, Thai Port could be set to lose the jewel in their crown, Ekkapoom Potharungroj (pictured below). The report states that several TPL clubs are interested in signing the diminutive midfielder, with Muangthong United and BEC Tero heading that list.

'Bon' joined Thai Port from Samut Songkhram in January 2011 and quickly established himself as a fans' favourite with some eye-catching performances and vital goals. In recognition of his excellent form, he was named as one of TLO's top 10 signings of 2011, and was also selected in Siamsport's team of the season.

Two more gone

TLO are reporting that Mongkol Namnuad (pictured below) and Todsapol Lated are set to join/have joined Muangthong United. Rumours have been rife that both players would be making the switch to Yamaha Stadium along with Ekkapoom Potharungroj. There is, however, no mention of Ekkapoom in the piece.

The article goes on to confirm the departures of Moudourou Swa-Moise, Munze Ulrich, Kim Dong Chan and Valci Junior. Again, no mention of Jacob Aikhionbare. It also states that Ney Fabiano's proposed move to PAT Stadium is on-hold until after the Toyota League Cup Final.

And then there were three!

It appears as though there has been something of a cull at Thai Port in the last few days! Steven Robb, Kim Ba-Wi and Mario Cesar Da Silva are the only foreign players still contracted with the club - therefore, by definition, Moudourou Swa-Moise, Ulrich Munze, Jacob Aikhionbare and Kim Dong Chan have all moved on.

Cameroonian defender Moudourou Swa-Moise (pictured below) joined the club in 2009 and soon became integral member of the team. He made exactly 100 appearances for Thai Port, scoring 7 goals. Sadly, Moise's last act in a Port shirt was to get himself sent-off for arguing with the referee at Samut Songkhram. He has already been linked with a move to ambitious Nakhon Ratchasima FC. I'm sure The Swatcats will face plenty of competition for his signature.

Munze Ulrich, another Cameroonian, was signed by Sasom Pobpraserd during the 2009 mid-season break. He was forced to share the goalkeeping duties with Pattarakorn Thanganurat for 18-months until the Thai shot stopper joined Police United. He made the position his own in 2011 and, bar one or two early season slip-ups, performed superbly throughout the year. Munze played 73 times for Port, conceding 61 goals in the process.

Nigerian striker Jacob Aikhionbare was recruited from NPL side Sunshine Stars in 2010. He made a big impact during his first season, scoring 9 goals in 34 games. Unfortunately, he was unable to reproduce that form in his second season, netting just 4 times in 32 appearances. He was, however, often left to plough a lone furrow upfront, which didn't suit his style of play at all. Despite his lack of goals, Jacob still chipped in with 7 assists during the 2011 season.

Korean forward Kim Dong Chan had a very short spell with the club. He failed to score during his 6-months at PAT Stadium, although he did manage to deflect one into his own net against Siam Navy. Does that count?

Port trio linked with MTU move

Rumours are abound on twitter that Muangthong United are interested in signing three Thai Port players. The trio are as follows: Ekkapoom Potharungroj, Todsapol Lated (pictured below) and Mongkol Namnuad.

Todsapol has been linked with a move to the Yamaha Stadium in the past. Indeed, Thai Port turned down bids from BG and MTU for the Ratchaburi-born defender in July. Ekkapoom, who also hails from Ratchaburi, has recently expressed his desire to stay at PAT Stadium. Although, after another season of off-field problems at Port, you couldn't blame him or the others for eyeing a move elsewhere.

TPL announce 2012 season kick off date

Thai Premier League chairman Dr Vichit Yamboonruang (pictured below) has announced that the 2012 TPL season will begin on March 17th, just six-weeks after Thai Port finish their belated 2011 campaign. I'm not sure when the new fixture list will be published, though. Does anyone even care? We all know it'll be obsolete by April or May.

The Bangkok Post also claims that Dr Vichit has clarified the foreign player rule for 2012; "Each TPL side will be allowed to have up to five foreign players on their books with a maximum three non-Asian players and one Asian on the pitch at the same time. The new regulation is to be in line with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) rules".

It'll be interesting to see how Thai Port deal with the rule change. I believe that we have six foreigners signed up for next season, plus Ney Fabiano, who is yet to be officially confirmed as a Port player. Clearly, seven into five does not go...I doubt any of them will fancy a season on-loan at Angthong, either!

UPDATE: The 2012 TPL fixtures will be published on January 31st. The season is scheduled to run from March 17th to November 10th. The interpretation of the foreign player regulation is still changing day-by-day. Teams can, apparently, register 7 players, with the 3+1 rule still applying.

Sompong gets life ban?

Ex-Thai Port striker Sompong Soleb has, according to the Bangkok Post, been given a lifetime ban from the Thai national team after being found guilty of drink-driving. The 25-year-old Buriram FC player was also handed a one-month suspended jail sentence, and a 5,000 baht fine by a Samut Prakan court.

UPDATE: Today's Post carries a follow-up story about Sompong. No mention of a lifetime ban, just that Schafer won't select him ever again. Looks like I was right to put a question mark in the title!

Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano turned out for Thai Port in Tuesday's charity match at PAT Stadium. He has not been officially unveiled as a Port player. Dare we assume it is a done deal? You can see plenty of pictures from the 'Farewell Maru' match here.

Thai Port still haven't announced the winners of the 2012 kit design competition. They initially stated on twitter that the winning designs were the two pictured below. That statement was later retracted because votes cast in the club shop had not been counted. It's like Florida 2000 all over again!

...To his playing career, not Thai Port. The Japanese defender will hang up his boots after Tuesday evening's friendly match between Thai Port and a Japanese XI at PAT Stadium. He will, however, continue to be part of the backroom staff.

The game kicks-off at 7:00pm and admission costs 100 baht. All the proceeds will go to a charity that helps people affected by the recent floods in Thailand - a very worthwhile cause! I believe that members of Thai Port's current first team will be taking part in the match, with plenty familiar faces also scheduled to make appearances.

Thai Port ended their 2011 TPL campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against rock-bottom Khon Kaen. Todsapol Lated equalised for the visitors after Chattapon Sitilo had given KK the lead via a deflected free-kick. Thai Port, by all accounts, were the better side but could not press home their advantage. The woodwork denied us twice during the 90 minutes - Worawut Wangsawad and Todsapol were the unlucky players.

So, after 34 games, we are 8th in the TPL table on 45 points. Police United and Chiang Rai United could, however, overtake us if they win their final fixture of the season. A top 6 finish for Port was a real possibility a few weeks ago. Just 4 points taken from 4 very winnable games put an end to those hopes.

Don't forget, the season isn't done and dusted just yet. There is a charity match at PAT Stadium on Tuesday evening (7pm start). More importantly, we take on Buriram PEA/FC/United in the Toyota League Cup Final at Suphachalasai on Feb 4th.

The old adage 'it's not a sprint, it's a marathon' will be the perfect epitaph for the 2011 TPL season. Thai Port's league campaign finally comes to an end this evening, exactly 320 days after it started. There will be little rest for the wicked, however, as we still have the small matter of a Toyota League Cup Final on the horizon.

Anyway, I digress...Thai Port will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's horror show against Sri Racha. The team looked devoid of ideas, confidence, spirit and quality during the 3-1 defeat. The latter problem, at least, can be solved easily enough. Munze Ulrich, Steven Robb, Kim Ba-Wi, Kiatjareon Ruangparn and Mongkol Namnuad are all set to return to the starting eleven, after missing out last week. However, according to Siamsport, Ekkapoom Potharungroj, Wisarut Wai-Ngan, Sivakorn Chakuprasat and Moudourou Swa-Moise will miss out through suspension.

Hosts Khon Kaen are already relegated and have little to play for other than pride. Their 4-0 mauling at the hands of Bangkok Glass suggests even that could be a leap too far for them. Indeed, the T-Rex have only won 3 of their last 24 TPL games. 3 points to Thai Port then, right? Not necessarily! We've made a recent habit of losing against teams anchored in the relegation-zone. Samut Songkhram beat us 2-0 having not won a home TPL match for six months, whilst Sri Racha hadn't won a TPL game on their travels for almost seven months before winning at PAT Stadium last Saturday.

We've been more charitable than UNICEF in recent weeks. Hopefully we can buck that trend at Khon Kaen Stadium and round-off our league fixtures on a high note. A repeat of the 3-0 scoreline from earlier in the season would do nicely!

Thai Port will play a Japan XI at PAT Stadium on Tuesday 10th January. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00pm. Whilst the kick-off time is fan friendly, the ticket prices are not. Supporters will have to pay 100 baht to watch a glorified kickabout. That said, all proceeds will go to charity.

The fixture was originally advertised as a 'Farewell to Maruyama' match. If I've translated this TLO article correctly, Yoshi (pic below) will be staying on at Thai Port in a coaching capacity, but will officially hang up his boots after Tuesday's game.

Former Thai Port duo Sompong Soleb and Jirawat Makarom, both now with Buriram FC, have been named in Thailand's preliminary King's Cup squad. Indeed, a third of the players named play for one of the soon-to-be unified Buriram clubs. Thai Port's in-form midfielder Ekkapoom Potharungroj has, however, been overlooked. Disgraceful.

Another name of interest to Port fans is Sarawut Masuk. The 21-year-old Chamchuri United striker has been strongly linked with a move to PAT Stadium in recent months. Good luck getting in the Thailand squad if you join Thai Port, Sarawut!

Siamsport have selected their Thai-only TPL team of 2011. The line-up is dominated by Chonburi, who have five players in the side. Just two of those named, Jakkrapan Kaewprom and Rangsan Vivatchaichok, are from Champions Buriram PEA, whilst Muangthong United's sole representative is Teerasil Dangda.

Despite Thai Port's up-and-down season, we, too, have a player named in the eleven. No prizes for guessing who. Yep, it's that man Ekkapoom Potharungroj! Thai Port concluded their 2011 home fixtures with a very disappointing 3-1 loss against Sri Racha. Ex-Chula United striker Aron Da Silva was the hero for the visitors. The Brazilian netted a hat-trick to keep alive his teams hopes of avoiding the drop. Phudit Niamkong scored a late consolation for Port. It was his first league goal of the season.

So, Port's TPL campaign comes to a long overdue end next weekend. We travel to already relegated Khon Kaen. I don't know about you, but I can't wait for the season to end. I suspect that our players feel the same way!

Today's Thai Premier League match against Sri Racha will come as a welcome relief for Port players and fans after another turbulent week at PAT Stadium. The issue of unpaid salaries has been put on hold until the end of January, so let's concentrate on the football, for now.

Thai Port got back to winning ways last Saturday with a 3-1 win over Police United, our fourth victory in seven games. We're also unbeaten in our last four TPL matches at PAT Stadium - a run that stretches back to September 25th when we lost 1-0 to Buriram PEA.

Whoever picks the Thai Port team will have to make at least two changes from last weekend's starting eleven. Steven Robb and Kim Ba-Wi will serve one-match bans, whilst Moudourou Swa-Moise, Kiatjareon Ruangparn and Mongkol Namnuad are all still suspended.

Siamsport's preview suggests that Wanlop Sae-Jiu will continue in goal. TLO reckon Munze will regain his place in the side. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Wanlop play again. We all know what Munze can do, so why not give the youngster another game between the sticks? The other bone of contention is over who will play at right-back. Siamsport go for Wisarut Wai-Ngan, TLO for Ittipol Nonsiri. Again, I'd select youth over experience. Wisarut would surely benefit more from 90-minutes of TPL football.

Thai Port's striking options are as thin as ever. Sarawut Kongjareon will, however, be buoyed by his goal in last week's win. It took his tally for the season to 2 goals in 31 matches. Hardly prolific! Speaking of which, Phudit Niamkong and Kim Dong Chan will both be looking to score their first TPL goals of the season, if selected.

A win for Port would lift us above BEC Tero and Osotspa into sixth place with 47 points. Sri Racha, on the other hand, need to win to maintain their slim hopes of staying up. A defeat for the visitors would confirm their relegation from the TPL. You have to say that the odds are stacked against the Blue Marlins. They've won just 1 of their last 13 TPL fixtures, and they haven't won a league match on their travels since June. Let's hope that run continues this afternoon! - No offence, Sri Racha fans.

A Thai Port player has confirmed via twitter that tomorrow's game vs Sri Racha will go ahead as planned (anyone know what channel the game will be broadcast on?). It appears that a compromise has been struck, whereby some of the overdue wages will be paid now, with the rest to follow by the end of January.

Thai Port have released a statement on their official website stating that the players & staff will be paid one month's salary - with the rest to follow in due course (how many times have they said that?). Whether this offer will be enough to appease the troops remains to be seen. I don't think one month's money is quite what they had in mind.

Port director Denphong Pongyaat has also said that next season's budget will be around 40,000,000 baht. I'll be sending over a rather appropriate book that should help them manage their finances a bit better!

Ultimatum

The latest report on TLO says that Thai Port's players and staff have given a clear ultimatum to club vice-president Worapong Tantivejchayanan. If he doesn't pay their outstanding salaries by 30th December, they will refuse to play in the Toyota League Cup Final.

Well, things might come to a head a lot sooner than that! It is strongly rumoured that the squad could refuse to play in the up-coming match against Sri Racha...if the money isn't forthcoming by Friday. If they do take strike action, they have my full support. They've been treated disgracefully by the powers-that-be and have no other option left open to them.

Let's hope that it doesn't come down to that. The ball is well and truly in Worapong's court! Super Rich? Prove it, pal!

UPDATE: Siamsport have also written an article about our plight. It's a bit tricky to translate clearly, though. There are some quotes from Ekkapoom Potharungroj and Todsapol Lated that say they've not been paid for 4-months and that other players are struggling to pay mortgages, car repayments and to provide for their families.

Later in the piece, Thai Port director Denphong Pongyaat claims that the club have asked Port Authority of Thailand for money to pay the players. He went on to say that when/if the problem is sorted out, the club will have a budget of at least 40,000,000 baht next season. Hmm. Forgive me if I remain sceptical.

Thai Port extended their unbeaten run over Police United to 9 games with a 3-1 win at PAT Stadium. The victory was far from comfortable for Port, who were put under a lot of pressure at times. Police, though, were very wasteful in front of goal. Thai Port, for once, were clinical. That was the key difference between the sides.

Steven Robb opened the scoring for the home team after 36 minutes. He skipped passed the full-back with ease, before calmly slotting the ball between the keeper and his near post.

The Scotsman was also involved in Thai Port's second goal, just after half-time. His left-footed cross was headed into the net by Sarawut Kongjareon. It was Sarawut's second of the season, and his first ever goal at PAT Stadium.

The 2-0 lead was very short lived, however, as Police hit back almost instantly. The goal was slightly fortuitous to say the least, as Tanat Wongsuparak's shot took a massive deflection off Mario Cesar Da Silva's knee before hitting the net. Wanlop Sae-Jiu had no chance of saving it.

For the next 15 minutes or so, the visitors did all the pressing. Thai Port were well and truly on the ropes. It was, therefore, very much against the run of play when Port restored their two-goal advantage. Worawut's free-kick from the right flank was nodded home by Todsapol Lated. Game over.

The win moves Thai Port up to seventh in the table. With two very winnable games remaining, we stand an excellent chance of consolidating our position, or maybe even climbing a place to sixth! (if the players get paid)

Thai Port return to action this afternoon looking to bounce back from last weekend's dismal 2-0 defeat against Samut Songkhram. The Christmas Eve visitors to PAT Stadium are Police United, against whom we have an excellent record. In fact, Port are unbeaten in 8 games against The Policemen (6 wins & 2 draws), with 6 clean sheets in the process.

Port are expected to make 3 or 4 changes from last Sunday's starting eleven, most of them enforced. According to Siamsport, Moudourou Swa-Moise, Kiatjareon Ruangparn and Mongkol Namnuad will all miss out due to suspension. Mario Cesar Da Silva, Worawut Wangsawad and Thongchai Keunkuntod are all likely to deputise. If Mario plays, it will be his 100th game for the club.

Phudit Niamkong could also lose his place after an ineffective performance against Samut Songkhram. If Sivakorn Chakuprasat replaces him, it would leave Sarawut Kongjareon as the only striker in the team. Sarawut's work rate cannot be doubted, but his goal-scoring ability certainly can. He's netted just once in 30 appearances for Port.

Police United go into the game on the back of some patchy form. They've won just one of their last 6 TPL matches, failing to score in 4 of those fixtures. Their away form is nothing to write home about, either. A 2-0 victory for Police against BEC Tero in October is the only win they've recorded in their last 8 games on the road.

Police boss Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul also has a few selection problems to ponder before kick-off. Siamsport are reporting that Thai international striker Surachart Sareepim is suspended along with Korean central defender Woo Hyun. Chakrit Buathong and Assaming Mae are both major injury doubts, whilst Jerry Amara is likely to face a late fitness test to decide whether he can play.

So, with Christmas almost upon us, Thai Port can hopefully provide some festive cheer by clinching all 3 points. The last time the two sides met, Police goalkeeper Sompong Yod-Ard gave us an early gift by inexplicably punching the ball into his own net. Let's ho ho hope he's in equally charitable mood today!

The burly Brazilian is in his second spell with the Sharks, having also played in the Thai League for Bangkok Glass and TTM. Swa-Moise punished by TPL

Thai Port's Moudourou Swa-Moise has been banned for two games and fined 20,000 baht for sarcastically applauding and then 'striking' referee Chaiya Mahaprab after Sunday's game at Samut Songkhram. It means that he will miss the Christmas Eve & New Years Eve matches against Police United and Sri Racha, respectively.

It's not the first time that the Cameroonian defender has clashed with Mr Mahaprab. The FIFA-qualified referee dismissed Moise during last season's TPL match between Port and Muangthong United at Yamaha Stadium.

Comment - So, he's been sent off twice in 100 games, both times by the same referee. To quote Harry Hill, "what are the chances of that happening?"

Myanmar target former Port coach?

According to TLO, the Myanmar Football Association want ex-Thai Port fitness coach Nathan Hall to help the national team prepare for their AFF Suzuki Cup campaign. The 26-year-old Australian is currently employed by TTM Phichit, having left Port earlier this year. The article states that Nathan wants to talk to the TTM management before deciding his future.

TPL: Samut Songkhram 2 - 0 Thai Port

A lacklustre Thai Port were beaten 2-0 by a gritty and determined Samut Songkhram team in a game that will not live long in the memory. Ex-Troyes, Sheffield United and Hearts forward Christian Nade was the tormentor in-chief as he bagged a brace for the home side.

The Frenchman opened the scoring just after half-time with a decent close-range finish. He doubled his tally and Samut Songkhram's lead with 18 minutes left on the clock following good work from fellow striker Bireme Diouf.

Nade was denied the chance to complete his hat-trick when he was substituted towards the end of the game. The change was justified, though, as his replacement, Efe Obode, made an immediate impact. The Nigerian ran at Moudourou Swa-Moise inside the 18-yard box and went down under a robust challenge from the Cameroonian defender. Chaiya Mahaprab had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Diouf spurned the opportunity to make it 3-0 by blazing the resulting penalty over the crossbar.

The drama wasn't over yet, however. Swa-Moise, who was making his 100th appearance for Thai Port, was shown a red card after the final whistle for sarcastically applauding the referee. What a pointless way to get sent off. It means that he will be banned for at least one of the games over the festive period.

So, Samut Songkhram's first home win since June lifts them out of the relegation-zone at the expense of TOT. Thai Port stay tenth on 41 points. Had Port won today, we'd be just 3 points behind joint fourth-placed sides Bangkok Glass and Pattaya United. What a missed opportunity!

Thai Port travel to relegation-threatened Samut Songkhram brimming with confidence on the back of a five-game unbeaten run. In order to make it 4 wins out of 6, however, we will have to do something that we've failed to do on our last three visits to Mae Khlong, and that's score a goal. In fact, we've only ever scored once at Samut Songkhram, a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat during the 2008 season.

The team news is unsurprising, really. Thongchai Sukkokee/Adul Leukijna are expected to retain faith with the majority of the players that started against BEC Tero last weekend. The one predicted change is Sivakorn Chakuprasat replacing fellow youngster Puttakun Narin.

It'll be interesting to see who is named on the substitutes bench. The likes of Mario Cesar Da Silva, Phudit Niamkong and Jacob Aikhionbare all trained on Friday. All three will hope to be named in the matchday squad. It would certainly gives us more options if the latter two were available.

Samut Songkhram, meanwhile, have been sucked into a relegation battle due to a dreadful run of results. The Mackerels have only won 4 of their last 24 TPL matches, picking up a paltry 19 points from an available 72. Luckily for us, the hosts home form is particularly bad. They've not won a TPL game on their own patch since June!

Expect to see one or two familiar faces wearing powder blue & white shirts. Samut Songkhram have four ex-Thai Port men amid their ranks - Jedsada Phulek, Todsapon Sri-Reung, Ekachai Preechakool and Pongpipat Kamnuan. Pongpipat, in particular, should get a good reception from the visiting fans. He performed consistently well for us during the 2009 & 2010 seasons.

There will also be another reunion (of sorts) between two former Scottish Premier League players. Steven Robb and Christian Nade will go head-to-head for the first time since St Mirren took on Hearts in February 2010. Robb's team (St Mirren) won that encounter 1-0 - I'm sure Robbo will be hoping for a similar outcome today!

This would tally with recent comments from an "in the know" supporter, who reckons that Adul takes charge of training & tactics - and that Thongchai little more than a figurehead these days.

BEC Tero striker Gilbert Komsoon has been fined 10,000 baht for making an offensive/provocative gesture towards Thai Port fans during Sunday's game. The 17-year old Ghanaian was sanctioned by his club, who apologised to Thai Port players, staff and supporters via facebook.

Just after finishing that last article, I stumbled across these photos of what could well be the new badge! It might turn out to be an elaborate hoax, however, but it looks genuine enough. The logo certainly conforms to the design brief. It's not a million miles away from what I suggested it might look like either.

Thai Port board executives (whoever they are) will meet on December 19th to try and draft/approve a budget for floodlight improvements. PAT Stadium is currently the only ground in the Thai Premier League that has sub-standard lighting, meaning our home games have to kick-off at 4pm, which clearly affects attendances.

It also appears that Thai Port will be getting a new club badge in time for the Toyota League Cup Final. Personally, I don't understand the need to change the badge every few years, but hey, what do I know? The main features of the new logo will be a cargo ship and a lion. So basically, a jazzed up version the one in the middle, below.

Following yesterday's Thai Premier League win over Chonburi at PAT Stadium, Thai Port boss Thongchai Sukkokee has commended Steven Robb for his sensible decision to retain possession instead of going for glory.

The incident occurred deep into injury-time, with Port leading 1-0 thanks to Ekkapoom Potharungroj's 79th minute header. Chonburi goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool, who had been playing as an auxiliary striker, was off his line when the ball broke to Robb. The Scotsman resisted the temptation to shoot, opting instead to hold the ball in the corner and run down the clock.

Coach Thong told TLO that he agreed with Robb's decision because Ekkapoom's goal had already set us on the way to victory. He added that it was a team win and Steven proved that by putting the teams needs ahead of his own.

TPL: Thai Port 1 - 0 Chonburi

So, Chonburi's stranglehold over Thai Port came to an end at PAT Stadium this afternoon. The home team won a pulsating encounter thanks to a spirited display from the boys in orange & blue, plus a rare headed goal from Ekkapoom Potharungroj. The diminutive midfielder (pictured below) was outstanding from start to finish.

Indeed, it was Ekkapoom who had the first shot of the match. His low drive skipped up off the turf just in front of Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool, but the experienced shot stopper dealt with it easily.

It didn't take Chonburi long to find their feet either. Suree Sukha raided down the right-flank following a mistake by Todsapol Lated. His shot, however, failed to trouble Munze Ulrich. The Port keeper may have been equal to Suree's shot, but he was beaten by Therdsak Chaiman 12 minutes later. Fortunately for the home fans, Moudourou Swa-Moise was on-hand to clear the ball off the line.

The end-to-end nature of the game continued for the remainder of the half, as both teams looked to attack. Ekkapoom, Wisarut and Moise all tried their luck for Thai Port, whilst Pipob and Arthit forced Munze to make good saves.

Chonburi were quickest out of the blocks in the second-half, creating two good opportunities in a the opening five minutes. Firstly, Pipob headed agonisingly wide of the post from Suree's centre. Then, Japanese midfielder Daiki Higuchi blasted the ball straight at Munze from 6-yards out.

Those near misses seemed to spark Thai Port into life. Ekkapoom almost gave the home side the lead twice in quick succession. Unfortunately, his shooting let him down on both occasions. He should have done better with the first chance, in particular.

Steven Robb was next Port player to have a go at breaking the deadlock. He moved unopposed towards the Chonburi goal and unleashed a powerful shot that corkscrewed wide of Sinthaweechai's right-hand post.

The Scotsman was in the thick of the action again moments later, this time at the other end. He produced a magnificent sliding challenge to prevent Puttinan from slotting the ball into the net from 6-yards. If he'd got it wrong, it would have been a penalty and a certain red card.

By now, the Sharks had the bit between their teeth and were looking dangerous, particularly from crosses. Despite earlier warnings, Port clearly hadn't taken heed of Pipob's aerial prowess, gifting the striker had another chance to net. Once again, Munze made the save. Shortly afterwards, Chonburi were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal.

Ney Fabiano was penalised for blocking off a Port player with his...erm...ample frame, giving Mongkol an opportunity to deliver a good cross into the box. The Chonburi defenders marked all the usual suspects, leaving Ekkapoom completely free to head home from close-range.

The remainder of the game was a bit of a blur. Sinthaweechai took every opportunity to leave his goal and play as an auxiliary striker, but it was all to no avail as Thai Port held out to claim their first victory over Chonburi in almost 6-years. Well done, lads!

Next up for Port is a short trip across Bangkok to play BEC Tero at Thepsadin Stadium on Sunday (6:00pm kick off). Win that game, and we could be as high as joint 5th in the TPL table!

Thai Port go into today's TPL clash with Chonburi defending a three-match unbeaten run. Extending that record will be a very tough task, with 'The Sharks' able to boast an impressive five-game winning streak over us. In fact, Thai Port's one and only victory against Chonburi came way back in January 2006.

Port boss Thongchai Sukkokee has injury doubts over several players. Worawut Wangsawad, Jacob Aikhionbare, Mario Cesar Da Silva, Phudit Niamkong and Sivakorn Chakuprasat are all likely to miss out. Kiatjareon Ruangparn, who played through the pain barrier against Chiang Rai United, is also a major injury doubt. If the skipper is unable to play, he is likely to be replaced by Kay Langkawong.

Visitors Chonburi will be looking to claim victory in order to keep their faint TPL title hopes alive. A more realistic target for them, however, is to pip Muangthong United to the runner-up spot. A win at PAT Stadium would leave them 3 points above MTU, but having played two games more.

Sharks coach Witthaya Laohakul has a few selection problems to ponder ahead of kick-off. According to Siamsport, Suttinan Phukhom's red card against Army United means that he is ineligible, whilst Arthit Sunthornpit, Anucha Kitpongsri and Ney Fabiano are all carrying knocks, but could be fit to play. Long-term absentees Nattapong Samana, Ekkapan Inthasen and Puritat Jarikanon might also feature.

The likes of Suree Sukha, Therdsak Chaiman, Kazuto Kushida and Pipob On-Mo are all set to start for Chonburi. Port defenders would do well to keep a close eye on Pipob. The striker has scored in each of his last three starts against us.

TPL: Thai Port 1 - 1 Chiang Rai United

Today's TPL clash between Thai Port and Chiang Rai United ended in 1-1 draw. It is the fourth time these two teams have played out a stalemate this season. The result extends Port's unbeaten run to 3 games, consolidating their mid-table status.

The visitors broke the deadlock midway through the first half, aided by some good fortune. Leontin Chitescu's harmless looking free-kick was diverted into his own net by Korean striker Kim Dong Chan. Some sources are crediting it as an own goal. I'll be generous and give it to the Romanian midfielder.

Thai Port almost hit back six minutes later when Mongkol Namnuad had a pop from the left edge of the penalty area. Once more, the luck was with Chiang Rai, as the ball cannoned back off the crossbar.

The home side weren't to be denied for too much longer, though, and shortly before half time Moudourou Swa-Moise restored parity. Kiatjareon Ruangparn, who passed a late fitness test, crossed from the right, leaving Moise with the simple task of steering the ball past Alonso.

The second period was fairly entertaining. Both sides had chances to win the game, although, it must be said, the best ones fell to the visitors. Port keeper Munze Ulrich produced two outstanding saves to deny Wasan and Leandro, respectively.

Port are back in action on December 7th when we entertain Chonburi at PAT Stadium. Our record against 'The Sharks' is nothing short of appalling - they are unbeaten in 10 games against us (8 wins and 2 draws). Can we break the hoodoo on Wednesday? Time will tell.

Thai Port are expected to name an unchanged line-up to the side that defeated Sisaket last weekend. One of the players will face a fitness test in the morning, but it is hoped he will be able to play. Whether Port's formation will be 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 remains to be seen. If I was a betting man, I'd say 4-5-1.

Thai Port boss Thongchai Sukkokee is in confident mood, having seen his side win their last two TPL games, and he wants nothing less than 3 points tomorrow: "We are well prepared, and we are not feeling anxious about relegation anymore, because we have 36 points. 3 more points tomorrow will surely make us safe."

As for the visitors, Siamsport say that the 'Fighting Beetles' will be without ex-Thai Port striker Edvaldo, Theerasak Pho-On and Panupong Arimviroj. However, prolific front-man Wasan Natasan is fit to lead the line. He currently tops the TPL scoring charts with 17 goals.

It should be noted that Port and Chiang Rai United have already played each other 3 times this season, all 3 games ended all-square (1-1, 1-1 & 0-0).

Contract concerns

The 2012 date for the 2011 Toyota League Cup Final has thrown another spanner into the works at Thai Port. Several players contracts run-out at the end of the year, meaning they can walk away from the club as free agents - leaving us short of personnel for the Suphachalasai showdown. In a bid to combat this, Thongchai Sukkokee's is hoping to extend the contracts of some of those players, so they can take part in the match vs Buriram PEA on February 4th.

Parking problems

The PAT Stadium car park (behind Zone B) is currently closed for repairs and will not be in use on Sunday when Port take on Chiang Rai United. The Royal Thai Police are still using the training pitch as a helicopter landing pad, so this parking area is also a no-go zone for cars.

Thai Port, via their official website, recommend that fans use the car park at the Port Authority of Thailand building, or public car parks (e.g. Tesco Lotus on Rama 4 road). They've also apologised in advance for any inconvenience caused.

Port linked with Chamchuri hotshot

A TLO report states that Thai Port boss Thongchai Sukkokee is keen to raid his former club Chamchuri for striker Sarawut Masuk (pictured below). The 21-year-old rose to prominence following his surprise selection in a recent Thailand squad. Indeed, he was handed his international debut by Winfried Schäfer in a friendly match against Jordan on October 6th.

Unsurprisingly, since then, Sarawut has been the centre of plenty of transfer speculation. Muangthong United, Bangkok Glass and Chiang Rai United are all said to be monitoring the youngster's progess.

Thai Port could, however, hold an advantage over rival suitors due to Coach Thong's relationship with the player and his club - "I know the playing style of Nui because we used to work together when I was assistant coach at Chamchuri. We want to bring him to Thai Port next season and I'm confident that he can fit into our system easily."

Thai Port ended Sisaket's 10-match unbeaten home record thanks to a brilliant goal by Mongkol Namnuad, and a very accomplished performance from Thongchai Sukkokee's men. Port have now won two league games on the bounce and sit comfortably in mid-table on 36 points, just 4 points behind fifth placed side BEC Tero.

For me, the most encouraging aspect of the game was the fact that we looked like a proper team. Every player seemed to know exactly what his job was - and as a collective, they stuck to the game plan throughout the 90 minutes. It's never easy to single out individuals for praise after a good team performance, but Steven Robb, Munze Ulrich and Wisarut Wai-Ngan all caught the eye. I was also impressed with the unselfish attitudes of Kim Dong Chan and Sarawut Kongjareon. They both ran their socks off for the cause.

Next up for Thai Port is a brace of home games. We play Chiang Rai United on December 4th and Chonburi on December 7th. Both should be good games!

Port boss Thongchai Sukkokee told the official website that several players are either injured or suspended, although he didn't name names. Siamsport's preview, however, states that Jacob Aikhionbare and Ittipol Nonsiri will not available for selection. It also suggests that Phudit Niamkong will start up-front alongside Steven Robb. Personally, I think the Scotsman will play in a deeper role (if selected).

Super Mario set to make history

If selected for today's fixture, Mario Cesar Da Silva will make history. He will become the first player to have played 100 games for Thai Port FC*.

The former Sport Recife, Botafogo and Penang player joined Thai Port from Selangor based side Proton FC just before the start of the 2009 TPL season, following the Malaysia FA's decision to ban foreign players from the MSL.

In his first season at PAT Stadium, Mario amassed 26 appearances, and helped to the club defeat BEC Tero in the Thaicom FA Cup Final, ending Port's 16-year trophy drought.

Mario was a lot busier in 2010, due to Port taking part in no less than 6 competitions (TPL, Queen's Cup, Toyota League Cup, FA Cup, AFC Cup and Kor Royal Cup). He clocked up 46 games, winning the Toyota League Cup and Thai Port's 'foreign player of the year award' in the process. He also netted his first goal for Port in a 1-1 draw against Osotspa Saraburi.

The Brazilian defender began the 2011 season in style by adding another winners medal to his collection. Thai Port beat J-League 2 team Shonan Bellmare 2-1 in the Toyota Premier Cup at Suphachalasai Stadium, with Mario scoring the opening goal from close-range. So far this term, he has featured 27 times, leaving him on 99 competitive appearances for Port. If you include friendlies, his total would be about 299!

* Kiatjareon Ruangparn has made well over 100 appearances in orange & blue, but he has 'only' played 98 times since Port Authority FC became Thai Port FC. Another player close to reaching the landmark is Moudourou Swa-Moise, who has notched up 95 games for the club.

** Looks like I wasted my time with this post! He didn't play today... and Kiatjareon is now level with him on 99 Thai Port apps.

Sripatum in same boat as Thai Port

The non-payment of salaries at Thai Port has been well documented over recent months. Well, it now appears that another team sponsored by Super-Rich are having similar problems. An article on the USM Thailand Futsal League website states that Sripatum may have to fold because their players have not received any salary money from Super-Rich since the 2011/12 season started.

Lilakorn let go by PTT

Issarapong Lilakorn's stuttering career suffered another blow this week when he was released from his loan-contract with Division One side PTT Rayong.

The former Thai Port striker joined PTT on-loan from Sisaket in June, but has since found himself at the centre of a pay dispute following his selection in Thailand's SEA Games squad. It appears that PTT were unwilling to pay his salary during the tournament and have sent him back to his parent club.

The 23-year-old was (to the best of my knowledge) de-registered from Sisaket's TPL squad during the mid-term break, so his 2011 season is basically over. It remains to be seen whether he will be a 'Dangerous Kouprey' in 2012. I wouldn't put money on it, though!

Sasom Pobpraserd and Wattana Pochanakong (or whatever he's called these days) made triumphant returns to PAT Stadium this afternoon with their new club, Bangkok United. Ex-Strasbourg midfielder Romain Gasmi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the second half. Pratya Narach sealed the win for the visitors later in the game.

Ex-Thai Port manager Sasom Pobpraserd has joined Bangkok United from Buriram FC. A report on TLO states that he will be an advisor to coach Wattana/Suwarot for the remainder of the season, before taking the head coach role in 2012.
